I feel....dirty....

I've been working with Cody trying to get him to mind me a bit better. I refuse to chase him so right now we're working on "come". (I know you see exactly where this is going)

So why do I feel so, so, dirty when I'm trying to "reward" him for listening?

Maybe it's the whole way I phrase things...."good Cody, come for me. Good boy, come."

Yeah - I'm gonna need to find some other type of positive reaffirmation. That one, well, it's just not working for me so well.

It works much better if you teach him to sit and stay... then put a leash on - tell him to sit and stay, walk around in front of him, say Cody Come and pull him a little forward on the leash, when he gets in front of you tell him to sit... give him a little tiny treat. Each time, step a little farther back. After you get past the short leash stage, it works best if you have a long leash or rope as you make the distance farther. After a few days he should come when he hears Cody Come. (drop the come on baby yada yada yada... until he has it down - it should be one single command that he follows... you can add the rest back later)

I guess I'll have to be the one to ask: "Is it working? Can you make Cody come on command?"

You really needed a monitor moisture alert on that one!
Um...."here boy?"

Treats!

They work wonderful for teaching dogs everything.

They do what you want, give them a treat. They start to remember that if you do what you ask they get a treat. Then after they get it down pat you start giving the treats less and less.

For the treats, take any normal treat and break it up into small pieces (I usually break them into 5mm by 5mm sizes).

I'm going through the same thing - and Sugar's female. . . The "big dogs" are helping a bit - but they're not the best babysitters or role models. I keep saying that it's probably a good thing that we didn't have children, since we can't even get the pets to mind.

But isn't it fun?!

Just keep him away from your head...

Well, I guess it's less embarrassing now that Cody's jewels are in a jar on the shelf.
