Passing of an Icon

I sang opera for many years. Oh, not professionally, but that was the plan.

One of my "heroes" (for want of a better word) was Beverly Sills. She was NEVER your run of the mill opera singer.

She had spunk. She had personality. She was NOT a diva.

And, My Lord, could that woman sing. Even now, thinking about it, I get chills. SHE was what I wanted to be.

I read this morning that Ms. Sills has died of cancer. The world has lost a great talent. And even more than that, an incredible woman.

Thank you, Ma'am. For the hours of joy you brought to the world. The inspiration you were for a little girl in a small town. And for sharing that talent so beautifully.

Thank you.

She was a wonderful singer. I remember when she retired - she said she would never sing again. I think she's one of the few people who have said they were retiring and actually stuck with it. Didn't she start singing opera as a child? She was a wonderful talent, may she rest in peace.

She and Eileen Farrell were some of my favorites. Eileen married a NYC cop and decided that family meant more to her than fame. Beverly Sills also put family way up there in what mattered to her as well. They were both wonderful exemplars of American talent and American ideals.

I will miss her terribly. She was indeed one of the greats and did not take herself too seriously.
