Layin' Down on the Job

Ok, here's a question for y'all.

It's been a LONG time since I've had a gas range. The broiler is UNDER the oven, not an actual part of it.

So - tell me - how do you watch what you're broiling to make sure you don't burn it?

Last night, while making Italian Beef sandwhiches, I wanted to toast the bread. Then, melt the cheese over the whole thing.

Couldn't see what I was doin', so I basically laid on the kitchen floor so I could watch. I'm thinking there must be a better way......

So can you help a girl out?

I'm missing something... I've had gas ovens until I moved here. But the broiler is always on the top and the regular oven heat is on the bottom. (just like electric ovens) There is usually a "broil" setting, just as there is with an electric oven and when you turn it to broil, the top gas element should start - not the bottom.

What kind of oven is it?

You are supposed to leave the broiler door partly open. That lets the heat out so you are broiling with the radiant heat from the flames, not oven heat. If the door is partially open you can step back from the oven and see your food cooking.

It occurs to me upon thinking it over - my current oven has 2 knobs for operating the oven. One knob I turn to whichever function I want it to do - regular oven or broiler or cleaning. The other is for the temp. Do you have a separate knob or maybe a switch to "turn on" the broiler? That could be what the problem is. Especially if it's a switch - which I've seen on ovens. It would be easy to miss then all the heat would come from the bottom instead of the top.

Laying on the floor sounds right to me. Altough it has been a while since we had a gas oven/broiler.
