Saturday Question

On Saturdays I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes: In case you haven't noticed, it's Fall!! I've always been just as excited about this time of year, even when I lived in Florida. I made sure I could get home annually right around this time of year and at least get a short glimpse of the fall colors. So I was wondering, what is the one thing, JUST ONE THING, that you enjoy most about fall.

My gut reaction was to say the colors. And those crisp cool temperatures. But as I got home last night, after being gone all week my landlady was burning leaves. You see it's Open Burn here in THE Valley right now. After carryin' all my stuff up and getting into comfy clothes, I curled up on the bed with a book and a movie (and a good glass of wine) and then I knew. I knew exactly what I love about fall. The smell of burning leaves.

That one scent pulls so many memories - fall days of raking leaves and then the cook outs that followed, hiking, scary stories told at night. Family, friends and great times. So yeah, I guess if I could only choose ONE THING that I loved best about fall it's that. The smell of burning leaves. What about you???

When I was 18 and on my own, my parents moved to Maine (USCG transfer) and have been there since. When I think of fall, I recall the many times over the years that I'd be driving to Maine to visit my parents, feeling the crisp New England sea air while taking in the brilliant colors of turning leaves on the thick forrested areas that lined the highway.

Oooh. We had a bonfire here last night, and with the windows open all night I enjoyed that smell...

I think you nailed it with burning leaves. :-)

Oh Tammi, it's hard for me to do just 1 thing. But if I had to, it would be the drives up from Mass to New Hampshire that I used to do with my friends just to see the fall colors. I also loved hiking up this one trail near where we stayed in Mass. when got to the top of the mountain we would always stare in awe at the beauty that lay before us for miles. breath taking.

the crisp cool temperatures and breezes... wearing sweatshirts... colors... leaves falling... the sound of leaves being raked up... curling up with a book... there's nothing about fall i don't love.

you know... elsewhere.

Opening all the windows in the house and letting the cool breezes clear away that 'stuffy' closed-in smell. And then hearing the birds and squirrels.

What do I love about fall? The smells. Plain and simple. While I love the colors, and the leaves falling so hard and fast it looks as if it's raining, nothing beats 'the smells.'

The smell of burning leaves.
The smell of a fireplace.
The smell of a distant house baking apple and pumpkin pies.
The smell of cinnamon and nutmeg and clove.
The smell of the grass shaking off its morning dew.
The smell of big morning breakfasts whisping lazily from stove vents first thing in the morning.
The smell of impending sleep- that crisp, cool air.
The smell of your first batch of homemade apple cider.
The smell of hot cocoa and marshmallows.
The smell of the pumpkin patch, complete with bales of hay and corn stalks.
The smell of simmering potato or chicken noodle soup.
The smell of turkey roasting in the oven.
The smell of chocolate chip cookies.

I could go on and on....it's simply the smells of simplicity. The smell of memories from childhood coming back to comfort you while you prepare the same comfort foods for your own children.

Ah- I live in the wrong time. I should have been a Quaker or something!
