I'm Medicated

Ok. I stopped last night and finally picked up my medication to stop smoking.

It's called Chantix and it's only been on the market for a month or so.

Huh. Not sure how I feel about that.

Side effects are weird(er) dreams, nausea and vomiting. They mention a few other things but these are the ones that caught my attention.

I asked the pharmasist about this stuff. It's so new he doesn't know much at all. First perscription this store has sold of it.

Lovely. Just call me Ginny. Ginny Pig.

From what I understand somehow, something in this drug get's into my brain and takes away the "joy" of smoking. They tell me after a week when I have a cigarette I will no longer enjoy it.

I'll be on this stuff for at least 3 months.

Let's think about that for a moment. 3 months. Mind altering drug. No joy. Nausea. Weird dreams.

And I'm paying $100 a month (after insurance) for this stuff!!

If THAT doesn't tell you how badly I want to stop smoking NOTHING will!!!

But on the upside, there may just be some blogfodder here somewhere......

well, i'm pulling for you. i think it's great you want to stop smoking and you're actually doing something about it rather than just talking about doing something about it.

I'm with Sarah, pulling for you. I quit 2 years ago, but used Wellbuterin (sp?). I know it is an anti-depressant, but doc said in 80% of the cases they found it worked for helping people stop smoking.

Congratulations on getting serious about quitting smoking!

Well butrin? No kidding? I'll have to tell my sister. I've been hoping she'll quit for years and although she knows my opinion, I don't beat her about it. (I do occassionally send her snippets of information like this.) Thanks.

I had started on the Welbutrone before and it was starting to work. HOWEVER, this doctor knew about my eating disorders and since W is not to be given to folks with that history (possible seizures) he refused. This stuff is brand new so we'll have to see........

I can't wait to read about the dreams. My uncle had some pretty crazy ones while he was using the patch to try to quit.

Congratulations! I'm proud of you! I know this wasn't easy and won't be for awhile. But I'm proud of you for taking the step and making the commitment.

It's hard to give up something you enjoy. But when this is done, we'll be able to enjoy time with you for so much longer!

DH used wellbuterin 5 years ago and pretty much quit with it (until 9/11 when he started again). He had his last cigarette 2/15/05 and still has dreams every now and then of smoking (and wakes up feeling guilty!).

He still gets some pretty wild dreams every now and then.

Mmm... we know a certain blogger whose wife is a Pharmacist. Perhaps you should throw him an email and see if his wife has heard anything. She's one of those brilliant people with a mind like a steel trap. Worth a shot!

And I am SO proud of you! Mr. Magoo quit 4 months ago now and he told me, after having smoked for 50 years, he wished he'd quit 49 years ago. He said it was single handedly the best decision he has made in his entire life... he feels that good.

I've heard good things about that drug. I'm rootin' for you!

I know you're going to do great, and I'm pulling for you 100%!
