Saturday Question of the Day

Every Saturday I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes

Given the storm that is holding most of this country hostage at the time, I thought we might work on ideas for "cold weather treats".

I still remember the blizzard of '78. I was living in Northern Indiana at the time, and had never seen so much snow in my life - I still haven't seen anything like it since. We were out of school for over a week. But.....we did have some wonderful treats. Lots and lots of hot chocolate, cookies, Smores (Mom built a fire). But my FAVORITE cold weather treat is a big ole pot of homemade potato soup with fresh french bread. Yummmyyyyy.......sitting around the fire in the living room, big bowl of soup, crusty bread -- still warm from the oven -- playing Dutch Blitz and rummy......almost made the whole thing bearable. Well, until we had to shovel the drive.

So tell me, what is Your Favorite Cold Weather Treat?

My favorite cold weather treat? No contest; a trip to Florida.

It's "up" to -8 here. This sux. Can't wait for summer.

As an adult? staying in bed all day with my wife "keeping her warm."

As a kid: Hot Chocolate with marshmellows and fresh lefse.

Mine's similar: Irish stew. I took the train to school from the age of 11 and the line was the worst in the country. Some winters I wouldn't get home till after eight at night. You bet I was tired, cold and ready for that :-)

I remember that storm!!! Half of our neighbors 40ft pines were blown down. Temps in the single digits. 3ft of the white stuff. It took two days to clear the driveway. Anyway, Italian sausage sandwiches, cooked on sticks in the fireplace.

Definitely would have to be homemade beef stew. Mr. Bonfire makes the best ever stew in the world, with potatoes, carrots, onions, turnips and super-tender beef chunks.

Hey, it's cold enough here today. I am off right now to pitifully beg the Mr. to cook me some.

Hot apple cider mix. The cheap stuff out of the packet. My buds always had it at hunting camp every year. It became a tradition.

Tomato soup, with a nice bit of basil sprinkled in it, some shredded cheddar and a dollop of sour cream on top, those little bitty crackers, and a cold beer... all devoured while cuddled under the electric blanket on the couch, watching some classic like "Animal House" or "Blazing Saddles".
Not that it really gets that cold here in SoCal, but I just read the weather reports for back East and I get sympathetic cold toes.

I remember that storm! We were living in Carmel and I remember at one point my Mom drove me across the street to play with my friends because it was too cold to go outside!

Cold weather treat? The first thing that popped into my mind is Grilled Cheese sandwiches with hot tomato soup (made with milk, not water) and crackers for in the soup...and Mom always put 2 gherkins with the sandwiches on the side.

That still says comfort to me even today!

Well, it's -5 here today and at 10am we had 6 inches on the ground. It's still snowing (12:30pm). blech.

And we have a birthday party to go to today. Like I want to drive in this stuff just to see family. Gack.

Favorite thing back then: Hot Chocolate
Favorite thing now: Hot Chocolate with Baileys!

Heh. I'm with Contagion, except switch out, "my wife" with "my husband". If I can't do the in bed all day thing with my spouse, then it's hot chocolate. No question.

The cider is good, but here in the south, nothing warms you up quicker than homemade chicken and dumplings. Either that or white chicken chili.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but when it's cold and snowy, I love a pot of coffee or pan of hot chocolate. Can't beat it. I love the smells and the warmth.

You nailed mine: potato soup. And hot chocolate. YUM!

I was just telling my kids about the 'big storm' of my childhood --I swear the snow was to my waist...

Hot Chocolate with Fluff...nothing better after coming in after a long day of sledding ...or a long day outside trying to convince a 4 yr. old and a 6 yr. old that the snow is too powdery to make a snowman...
