Saturday Question of the Day

Every Saturday I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes:

What is your favorite childhood story? You know, that story you could never hear often enough.

I was going to say The Little Train that Could. You know, I think I can, I think I can... but Mom disagreed.

She reminded me that the one story I had to ALWAYS hear was Beauty and the Beast. I loved the fact that Belle was a reader, and that she loved her Daddy. When the movie came out it was (and is) still one of my favorites.

I love the lesson. Look below the surface. Don't take things at face value. But I suspect the reason I enjoyed it so much as a child was the surprise ending - and yes, it was a surprise to me.

So tell me, what was your favorite childhood story?

The Hobbit.

When I was about 9, one of my older brothers told it to me (in several installments, and from memory) as a bedtime story. When I read the book a few months later, I was surprised how many of the details he'd included.

Can't remember it being any one story. We read alot. All of the Black Stallion series, anything by Jim Kjelgaard (Big Red), the Little House on The Prarie series, and all things Louis L'Amour. Oh, yes, alot of Andre Norton.

Loved books and stories, period. Wish I could single one out, but everytime I do, I remember another!

Cat in the Hat. Secret mischief, all is well in the end and a big hat! What more could a kid want?

Hmm. We read so much. I would say, "'Twas the Night Before Christmas". It was read only on Christmas Eve, before we went to bed. It was a pop-up book and we'd all gather around my Dad while he read it, each of us taking turns gently pulling the tabs. We were never allowed to play with the book. My kids gather around my Dad now on Christmas Eve and he reads it to them. Same book, although now aged.

OMG...I don't know if I could ever pick. I was such a geek that my mom had to yell at me to put the book down and go out and play in the sun! haha. Stone Soup, Anything by Bill Pete, The Chronicles of Narnia, Laura Ingles Wilder series, anything by Judy Blume, The Wrinkle in Time.... I guess it's fitting that I'm in Grad school to be a librarian! LOL

BTW: Congrats to Bad Example & Boudicca for their nominations for the WEBLOG awards!!!!! That's SO awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
