Saturday Question of the Day

Every Saturday I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes:

This week's question comes from my lovely and talented Blogsis Sally at Whimsey Capricious. Thanks Sally - I appreciate the help more than you know!!

Scents are known to trigger powerful memories. Which scent "sends you back", to certain events / times in your life?

For me that is such a difficult question. I have the scents of home, baking bread, cinnamon, apple, my mothers pefume. But then I have the scents of my adult professional life. Metal being welded, shipping oil - I know that sounds strange, but those are actually a huge comfort for me. Takes me to a time I was so happy, confident, strong.

But I think the scent that always has and always will bring me comfort is good coffee brewing. It's the first thing I would notice as I woke up in the morning as a child. I knew everything was alright cause Mama was making coffee. Now, it still gives me that feeling of security, love and home.

There is nothing that makes me melt like someone bringing me a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. Yeah - that's a good thing.

So which scent "sends you back", to certain events / times in your life?

Hey, glad I could be your 10,000th. I finished watching Stolen Honor and then popped back in. Thanks for the links.

Cotton t-shirts washed in certain types of laundry detergents take me back to getting to wear my daddy's as a little bitty girl as a nightgown and sleeping in their bed after their alarm went off in the morning.

Something in my kitchen cabinet mixes with a spice and gives me a memory of my Grandmother's wooden pantry, with all the shelves, spices, jars, old refrigerator.

Fresh dirt also makes me think of her and her greenhouse.

And, of course, chlorine always makes you feel like you're back in the deep end of the pool as a kid with water up your nose!

This is a great one! I was thinking of this memory this week. for me it's the smell of sun-scorched sea grass and/or the scent of a cotton-shirt being worn at the beach. The shirt invariably picks up the scent of sand, sea air and sun. Those that have put their clothes out in the sunshine to dry know what I'm talking about.

This scent always reminds me of my very first memory ever, the first time I met my grandparents who lived just off a beach.

Thanks for the memory!

Stale beer. Takes me back to my college days. Reminds me of a Saturday morning, after a big Friday night party at the fraternity house. It also reminds me of the headache I would soon wash away at an afternoon beer blast. Ah, those were the days.

My sister recently bought Cartier's new perfume...when I smelled it I was instantly transported to a 'feeling' from my childhood...but it was driving me crazy because I couldn't place it. I was driving her crazy because I kept smelling her --trying to conjure a tangible memory...FINALLY it hit me...it smelled like the heads of those large plastic baby dolls that had the Barbie plug-style hair. It reminded me of new dolls on Christmas and the 'just opned' smell they had for a brief time. I guess that's not a great endorsement for Cartier...but it was a nice reminder for me! LOL

This is going to sound really odd. When I first started teaching, the smell of the plastic maths equipment sent me straight back to my own days in Kindergarten. My assistant used to laugh and say, "Oh, Sally's sniffing the multilink again."

And, for some reason, Chanel no.5 smells like Christmas. I don't wear it until November at least.

Congrats on 10k!!!

As for smells

Its actually a combination of smells

Frying Ham, and Coffee brewing with the smell of grass (as in yard grass) coming in the windows.

Reminds me of home in Georgia, and time for haying.

More I get older the more I wish I was still in those days.

Before they closed the plant, I used to love to walk through the engine shop. It reminded me of the smell of an aircraft carrier. It took me back to visiting my Dad when he was on the Saratoga or the Lady Lex.

Bread baking.
My grandmother always baked bread
She lived in Nebraska, which is where we spent our summers, and that smell invokes wonderful memories. I sometimes have dreams with her in them and I will wake up smelling her breads....
Odd? yeah, but I loved that lady!
