Saturday Question of the Day

Every Saturday I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes:

Since it's almost Halloween, let's take a stroll down memory lane. What was your favorite TREAT to get whle you were trick or treating?

Growing up in the 60's life was so much simpler. Kids got dressed in their costumes and hit the streets of the neighborhood. And it was ENCOURAGED!! :-) I remember meeting up with all my friends at dusk, the excitement so intense, aniticipation of what wonderful goodies we would be collecting the driving factor.

We didn't really care about the costumes, oh they were cool and we ohhed and ahhed appropriately, but it was all about the goodies. And I mean goodies, not just candy.

Our neighborhood was a pretty tight group. Everyone knew each other, spent lots of time with each other - just like an extended family. So homemade goodies were fine and safe.

Of course you had the candy bars and chocolate kisses, but there were just not the big winner. It was like the moms in our neighborhood put on a competition to see who could "hit one out of the park" with the kids each year - the winner always being the kids themselves. There were rice crispie treats with little candy pumpkins on them, homemade fundge wrapped in cute halloweeen paper, popcorn balls, and my favorite Carmel Apples.

And word spread fast on the streets. As we would pass up and down the sidewalks you'd hear - Davis has popcorn balls!!! Fritz has $1000 bars, but if you stand there she'll give you and extra handfull!!

Oh yeah, we worked it, and loved every minute. After going to each house (and if you were brave the "good ones" twice we head home and sort everything out. There was always too much, and it was always too good.

Damn, those were the days, ya know? And I LOVED those carmel apples. So, What was your favorite TREAT to get whle you were trick or treating?

As soon as I read "halloween," I thought of carmel apples! Definitely on of my favorites!

And then there were those few that gave out dark chocolate. Easily tied for favorite.

Oh, yeah, and $1000 bars. And ....

Least favorite? Bit o Honey

I hated Bit O Honey & MaryJanes wheni was little -but now I love both...

Yes...carmel (and candy-covered) apples -but no one ever gave such wonderful treats! LOL
Remember everyone gave ACTUAL candy bars...now they give those tiny things...
I HATED when old ladies gave you a little sandwhich bag with like 10 pennies in it..or a regular apple that your mom just made you throw out anyway -because the little old lady might have put a razor blade in it! hahaha

I just made up my bags -they include:
Box of Junior mints
Box of Dots
Bag of Nicolodean fruit snacks
mini Charelston Chew
Tootsie rolls
Spider ring
Glow-in-the-dark Fangs

Of course my boys will probably eat them all before Halloween and I willhave to do it all over...

Money. Gotta be money :-)

Oh, and I did this in the early to mid 70's. After dark, unescorted.

Small town - 9000 people or so.

Just thinking we were out after dark on our own was a treat. I was shocked when my parents told me that they secretly followed us! I was fond of satsumas though. In the seventies, you couldn't get them all year round.

I liked anything chocolate - but especially the Hershey's chocolate. Hated Bit o'Honey and those awful orange and black wrapped candies... don't know what they were but I think you can still get them. We were in the burbs - so few homemade treats - just the occasional popcorn ball. And I hate to say it - but I just loathe carmel apples. I don't know why - but I simply can't eat them. So that leaves more for you *grin*.

I LOVED Halloween trick-or-treating in Portland, OR, where I spent part of my childhood.

We got tons of candy and there were houses that were decorated really scary. We really loved being "scared."

Favorite treats:

Popcorn balls
Carmel apples
Milk Duds
Big Hunks
Sugar Daddies and Babies
Double Bubble

A date lol

I actually managed to get a very nice date with a lot of Treats from going out when I was 17 LOL

There are better treats to be had, I suppose, but to me, nothing says "Halloween" like candy corn.

Comic Books.
Friends of my parents always gave comic books for treats.

Then the last house we all went to was at the top of the hill, where you were invited in, given hot chocolate, and warm brownies or freshmade popcorn balls. . .
