Saturday Question of the Day

Every Saturday I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes:

What was your favorite game growing up?

Mine was and is a card game called Dutch Blitz. (I can't believe I found a website for it!!)

It's a very fast paced card game that (when playing with me) get's very rowdy, almost - and I said almost - violent.

It's simple. You have a special deck of cards. They seperate into 4 groups, buggys, pumps, buckets and wheel barrows. There are four colored groups of numbers, red, yellow, green and blue. You have your working hand on the table and your counting cards in your hand and you slap (in numberical order by color) the cards on the table. The goal is to be the first thru your "blitz" pile and yell BLITZ. (the website is better at describing than I am)

I LOVE THIS GAME. It moves incredibly fast and you have to look at everything at one time. Speed is king and I have only lost one game in my adult life. To my little sister (that sucked). Oh, I've lost hands, but never games.

I don't remember NOT someone playing this game. For generations it has been what we do after meals and such at family gatherings. It's loud, it's fast and it's fun. My one cousin's husband designed a deck that the cards are 3 ft long and is played on the floor. I can't play that one. I end up hurting someone.

We have family game nite. Before I moved we would gather at my cousins house with her kids and play, laugh and curse. Oh and laugh. Did I mention laughing? Cause we laugh - a lot.

Anyway - What was/is your favorite game?

What a great regular feature! I liked acting out T.V shows and movies. Always wanted to be "Batgirl". She had a cool glittery bike. "Wonder-Woman" was another good one. "In her satin tights! Fighting for your Rights!". I hated it when our gang played "Star Wars" though, as I was the only girl and had to be "Princess Leia waiting at base to be rescued".

We were a big game family. We loved this game called Twixt. Also Pente. And of course as we got older as a group, Pictionary because we LOVED putting my Left Brained Dad with my Right Brained Mom. They could never figure out what in the hell the other person was drawing!

The card game my family played the most was called Spite - now I understand it is called Spite and Malice, but the game game that the whole neighborhood played together was called Pony Express Riders - and we played it throughout the neighborhood - two teams - the Pony Express Riders and the Indians and Robbers who wanted to keep the Pony Express Riders from getting their messages delivered.

The rules were pretty detailed - we had safe houses (a space under a bush or a tree in the neighborhood where the Pony Express Riders were safe from attack) and we had continuation rules, in case someone's mom rang the dinner bell early and part of the team had to go in to eat.

It was way cool!

Canasta was the family's game. Grammy taught us (by her rules that seemed to change from time to time, depending on the hand she had). We played it all the time at family get-togethers. Gram taught me how to shuffle the cards then arch them up and sort of back-flush them. I miss that sweet old girl. She was a hoot and could make the best chicken and dumplings EVER!! (the fat noodle kind).

Good memories...

As far as sentimentality goes, I'd have to say my favorite game growing up was Gin Rummy. I played it with my mom all the time.

But in terms of the sheer fun of playing them, I loved Pente and Othello. Later, Trivial Pursuit became a favorite.

You're an evil, evil woman for bringing up this card game.I've never played it and now I want to. Desperately...so I can beat you.

Yes, I'm that competitive with card games.
