Saturday Question of the Day

Every Saturday I'll try to come up with some "out there" question that just makes you stop and think about something not so important. Think of it as a mini vacation. If you have any ideas drop me a line and we'll throw it in here. Who knows, it might be fun.

OK - Here goes:

Sticking with the Food Theme I've had lately - describe your favorite pizza.

Now - for me a real treat is NY style pizza with just extra cheese. Simple. To the point.

But I also have to admit to being a complete pizza-freak. If it's on a crust (perferably crispy/thin) has sauce (red or white) and melted cheese - hell I'll give it a whirl. Pizza Is The Perfect Food. I learned that in college!

Now - I have also discovered a frozen pizza that is good enough to consider a treat. Really.

It's Freschetta's Brick Oven with the fire baked crust. Smoked ham and portabella mushrooms. Listen to this:

Julienne strips of smoked ham and roasted portabella mushrooms on a creamy onion sauce topped with - wait for it - roasted garlic, sliced green onions, mozzarella AND fontina cheese.

The first time I tried it I was on the phone with a friend. I finally had to confess that I blacked out an entire 5 minute segment of our conversation as I ate the first piece. (I know it's rude to eat on the phone, but I'm always running, so I have to multi task). All I remember is how surprisingly good this frozen pizza was. I took the second bite and felt the snap of the green onions - WOW.

(sorry - I was having a moment just remembering)

Oh My Goodness. It's dinner tonite. I can't wait.

Oh, I'm sorry - I went to my happy Pizza Place - so tell me about YOUR favorite pizza.

Thin crust, light on the sauce, sausage and beef mix, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, olives, fresh tomato. Toss extra cheese on top.

Follow with Pepto.

I used to deliver pizzas for pocket money in college, so my favorite was whatever got burned that we could eat for free :-)

We were also entitled to one free small pizza with two toppings every day we worked (although depending on who was manager on that shift, you could usually talk him into throwing a few more things on there :-)

Pepperoni & pineapple was one of my staples.

Thin crust, New York style, pepperoni and sausage. There's a place in Del Mar, Tony's that makes the best in the 'hood. I could eat all of it, there's essentially no upper limit to how much pizza I could eat. Stopping after two (or three, or four) slices is an act of consummate will. Romeo never left Juliet with more backwards glances in regret than I have pushed away the pizza box, while slices yet remain.

The clan prefers pan, unfortunately. So we compromise: We get pan.

I have to pick just one?!?! Well, I guess thin crust, Brooklyn-style pepperoni would be my first choice. Pan is good too, though. Chicago style, too. So is stuffed crust. And white pizza. Oh, and Sicilian. Don't forget strombolis. Calzones too, for that matter. Damn. I gotta pick just one?

I know - it's tough, but I figured you all could handle it. You will notice though that I didn't REALLY pick just one. ;-)

Every one listed sounds GREAT! Plus, I'm originally from outside Chicago so that is like manna to me!!!

Thick crust, round, ham, pineapple and onions. Yummy!

Chicago style ala Gino's, or ham and pineapple, or loaded (hold the shroobies), or ....... damn, I'm hungry!

Just one? Hmmmmm. In Chicago, I love to go to a place that I think is called Garibaldi's. Gino's used to be the best, but this place beats Gino's hands down. Best deep dish around these days, and I know how to find it even if I can't remember the name. :)

At home, prefer to make my own when I can, from crust on. Do a good crust, hand toss, use some garlic oil and maybe a hint of truffle oil; then go for some good ingredients including fresh mushrooms. Good cheese too, no artificial stuff, and use a mix to get great flavors.

Darn, now I'm hungry again...

I love Chicago style, but can't find that down in my neck of the woods. We do NY style, fortunately I married an Italian who does it from scratch! Yum! Light sauce, heavy cheese, shrooms, onion, peppers. I'm not carnivorous when it comes to pizza.

My favorite pizza:
Thin crust, black olives, mushrooms, shrimp and lotsa, lotsa mozzarella cheese.

The only bad thing about it is I can never leave enough for a second meal and yes I pay for it later.
